BCCF E-MAIL BULLETIN #11
BCIT JUNIOR OPEN The 9th Annual BCIT Junior Scholastic tournament took place on January 26th and attracted 133 players, including a large contingent from Washington State. There were 25 trophies up for grabs, one for each grade (including Kindergarten) and three to the top-place finishers in each of the four sections. When the dust had settled the trophy distribution was as follows: Kindergarten - grade 2 1st Alexandra Botez 2nd Narek Bobloyan 3rd Farley Cannon Grades 3 - 4 1st Thomas Witecki 2nd Sean Debroni 3rd Christopher Yoon Grades 5 - 6 1st Noam Davies 2nd Danny Yu 3rd Bryan Young Grades 7 - 12 1st Lawrence Bau 2nd Gavin Atkinson 3rd Lucas Davies Grade trophies K Thiruvaran Alex Sabaratnam 1 Mikayla Chang 2 Mark Ragasa 3 Joel Gaudet 4 Thomas Chow 5 Kyle King 6 Stefan Trandafir 7 Tiffany Tang 8 Lane van Weerdhuizen 9 Andrey Kostin 10 Jason Lee 11 Kevin Au 12 Andrew Cheng B.C. INTERSCHOOL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP by Bruce Harper This year's B.C. Interschool Team Championship is being held in two stages. On February 1, 2003, an elementary school event was held at West Point Grey Academy, which generously donated its senior school facilities for the event. Twenty-two teams and about one hundred players attended. No appreciation of gratitude to West Point Grey Academy can do it justice. As every chess organizer knows, any successful event begins with a good idea and a quality facility. The latter is arguably more important. In additional to an accessible, well-lit and convenient playing hall in the senior school cafeteria, West Point Grey Academy provided analysis rooms, coffee and even lunch for the players, coaches and parents at no cost. Fiona MacFarlane, who teaches at the senior school, greatly assisted the organizers and was at the school both the evening before the event and throughout the tournament. West Point Grey Academy has already offered to host the event in 2004. As for the tournament itself, six teams qualified for the finals. Last year's winner, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, convincingly held onto their favourite status, coming first with 16 points of a possible 20. Four teams tied for second with 13 points: Miller Park, Queen Mary A, Vancouver Christian and Chartwell. Next was Westcot, with 12.5, then St. George's A and York House A, both with 12.0. Unfortunately, it turned out that Miller Park included an ineligible player, so they were disqualified. As St. George's A beat York House A in their individual match, the finalists are: Our Lady of Perpetual Help A Queen Mary A Vancouver Christian Chartwell Westcot St. George's A These six schools will play a round-robin at St. George's Senior School on February 22, 2003. The Secondary School championship, open to all secondary schools, will be held concurrently. RAISING THE ROOF ACTIVE by Vaclav Sladek North Vancouver, BC - February 1/2003 Organizer and TD Vaclav Sladek managed to lure Robert Wilkins and George Kosinski out of long retirements and then proceeded to win the event with 4/5. Eduardo Moura and George Kosinski tied for 2nd and 3rd with 3.5/5. All players received free toques from Raising the Roof, a national project raising money for the homeless through the sale of toques every February. See raisingtheroof.org for more. THIRTY YEARS AGO . . . by Bruce Harper 30 years ago, my column in the Vancouver Province had the title "Chess Fads change like women's fashions..." I don't think this can be characterized as sexist (the editor wrote the headlines, incidentally), since fads in women's fashions are still with us - perhaps the biggest change being that a lot more women ignore them. But I digress. One of the featured games, from the Louis Riel Open - which attracted 60 players - was between Chris Jones and Peter Danenhower. Black chose the Modern Benoni Defence, which at that time was enjoying an upsurge in popularity after Fischer surprised Spassky with it in their 1972 match, and Jones selected the aggressive Taimanov System: Jones-Danenhower, Vancouver, 1973: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e6 4.Nc3 exd5 5.cxd5 d6 6.e4 g6 7.f4 Bg7 8.Bb5+ As I understand it, this move is currently considered to be almost a refutation of the Modern Benoni. It is interesting than 30 years ago Jones selected this line. 8...Bd7? 8...Nfd7 is necessary. Now Jones does not have an opportunity to show whether he would have discovered the Kasparov finesses which seem to have put the Modern Benoni out of business - at the moment. 9.e5! dxe5 10.dxe5 Nh5 11.Nf3 0-0 12.0-0 a6 13.Bxd7 Qxd7 14.Ne4 Re8 15.Nd6 Rxe5 This exchange sacrifice may be Black's best chance, but unfortunately for him, his problems continue. 16.Nxe5 Bxe5 17.Nxf7 Bd4+ 18.Kh1 Nf6 19.Nh6+ Kg7 20.Qf3 20.Qe2 was even better. 21...Qd6 21.g4!? A dangerous attacking idea - for both sides. By dislodging Black's knight from f6, White opens the door for his heavy pieces, but he also exposes his own king. 21...Nbd7 22.g5 Nxd5 23.Qf7+ Kh8 24.Bd2 b5?! Black should boldly capture on b2. 25.Rae1Ne5 26.Rxe5! Bxe5 Black can't recapture with his queen, because of 27.Qf8+! Rxf8 28.Rxf8+ Kg7 29.Rg8 mate. White's king therefore remains safe while White's pieces rampage through Black's position. 27.Qb7 Threatening almost everything. 27...Rf8 28.Rf7? After 28.Nf7+ Rxf7 29.Rxf7 Kg8 30.Rd7, Black can resign. 28...Nc7 Black defends ingeniously, cutting off White's queen from his rook... 29.Qf3! ...but only for one move. Now White threatens 30.Rxf8+ 29...Ne6? Much better was 29...Re8!, forcing White to find a few tricky moves: 30.Rf5! gxf5 31.Nf7+ Kg8 32.Nxd6 Bxd6 33.Qc6! 30.Rxf8+ 1:0 Black resigned, as the knight fork on f7 will cost him his bishop on e5.
