WESTERN CANADIAN OPEN

This 10-round event took place at the Ramada Plaza Vancouver Airport Conference Resort in Richmond, July 9-18.  The 97-player turnout was substantially less than the organizers were originally hoping for (the initial prize fund was based on 200 entries), but the field did include 10 titled players (3 GMs, 1 IM, 6 FMs, 1 WFM) and entrants from 8 FIDE Federations: Canada, the U.S., the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Israel, and Scotland.

Generally the top players won the top prizes; the main exceptions were Vicente Lee, newcomer to Canada, who upset GM Juan Bellon Lopez in the last round to claim a share of second overall, and  B.C. champion Jack Yoos, who experienced a slow start.  Noteworthy results were posted by a number of junior players who performed well above their ratings; these included Jack Cheng, Vlad Gaciu, Eric Hansen, Daniel Kazmaier, Lesley and Andrea Cheng, Valentina Goutor, Brianna Reid, Lucas Davies, Tanraj Sohal, and Robert Lau.

An innovative feature of the WCO was the distribution of a substantial percentage of the prize fund via round prizes.  Three prizes, Best Game, Brilliancy, and Upset, were awarded in each class (Open, U2400, U2200, U2000, U1800, U1500) every round, for a total of 15 prizes per round.  The Upset prizes were determined solely by result and rating differential (with the latter being halved for a draw), but the Best Game and Brilliancy prizes were judged by GM Duncan Suttles, who assigned a numerical score to each submitted game without knowing the identity of the players.  A total of 54 players won round prizes, many of then multiple times; those who amassed more than $100 in round prizes were Dale Haukenfrers, Vicente Lee, Nathaniel Koons, Ben Daswani, Eric Hansen, Travis Lane, Daniel Kazmaier, Joshua Henson, and Jack Cheng.  The latter, who is 8 years old and rated 1267, won five (!) upset prizes against "A" and "B" class players, and finished the tournament on 50%.

Many thanks are due to all those who helped organize the WCO, the financial sponsors, the TDs, and to the players.  While the tournament might have been smaller than the organizers had envisaged, it did fufill one of the objectives for a successful event - the players enjoyed themselves.

WCO BUGHOUSE OPEN by Ben Daswani

The WCO Open was held after round ten of the Western Canadian Open in the adjacent skittles room on July 18.  Twenty-seven players (25 were also players in the WCO) participated in a somewhat hectic event, making it the most attended tournament in Bughouse BC's history!  Bruce Harper devised a way of "accelerating" pairings by giving each participant a first-round bye depending on their ranking.  It definitely avoided the typical "wasted rounds" at the beginning but it will have to be tried in a longer tournament before an accurate assessment can be made.

When the dust settled, the winner was Manitoba's Joshua Henson with a score of 18.5/24.  Tied for second were Ben Daswani and Fanhao Meng with 16.5, followed by Bruce Harper and Jesse Bouvier with 16.  Jack Yoos, German FM Hartmut Metz and Travis Lane rounded out the top with 15.

The event featured fourteen (!) newcomers to rated bughouse in BC, including Swedish GM Pia Cramling who, unfortunately, was forced to withdraw after the penultimate round due to bughouse exhaustion.

The crosstable can be found at http://bug.chessbc.com/tourn022x.html.

CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP SPOTS

This year's Canadian Championship and Zonal will take place in Toronto at the end of August.  There is a 2200 minimum rating requirement, but each provincial assocation is allowed to designate upto three U2200 players who may play in the Championship.  If you are rated under 2200 and are interested in playing in the Canadian Championship, please let the BCCF executive know by e-mailing swright2@telus.net

N.B., granting of one of these designated spots to a player permits them to enter the Championship, but there is no financial support provided by the BCCF.

CHESS IN BRAZIL

From Eduardo Moura: "Mr. Mauro Amaral - an acquaintance of mine - chess arbiter and organizer from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has asked me if I could help him publizice his chess tournaments and web page among the Canadian chess public.  Mr. Amaral regularly organizes IM and GM tournaments in Sao Paulo.  In June he is running two closed tournaments with IM norms and in July one tournament with GM norms!  His web address is: www.comunic.com.br/xadrez/   Perhaps in the future we could have Canadians playing in his tournaments.  I see at Mr Amaral's web page that he already has some US players playing this year, so why not Canadians?! Anyway this may be a good opportunity to strengthen the ties between Canadian and Brazilian chess players."

Mr. Amaral can be contacted directly at xadrez@estadao.com.br

ALCAN ANNIVERSARY TOURNAMENT by Mike Bateman

Alcan has asked me to organize a chess tournament for their 50th anniversary celebration here in Kitimat, on the 31st of July.  It will be a 15 minutes per game per side, clocked event with 5 rounds.  It will start at 13:00 hours, (1 in the afternoon) and go till 17:00 hours (or 5 in the afternoon).  It will be held in the main ceremonies tent at the Riverlodge Rec Center.  This is not a rated event because it is open to all persons partaking in the Alcan celebrations.  I will be purchasing 10 new sets and 10 new clocks which I hope to be using as prizes.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  This is a free event.

[The person who is now looking after the Alcan tournament is Al Annett, aannett@telus.net ]
